On Friday June 8 Federal District Court Judge John Gibney approved the $2 billion proposed settlement between the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Department of Justice over services for people with intellectual disabilities. This settlement would help bring Virginia in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act by shifting services from institutional based to community based by closing four of its five training centers. In addition, 4,170 waivers will be made available which will provide services to many more of Virginia’s intellectually disabled citizens.
