Excerpt from the attached newsletter:
In Lansing next week . . . 800 seniors and younger advocates for seniors will gather at the State Capitol for the 5th Annual Older Michiganians Day on Wednesday, June 20. The rally is organized by an aging network coalition including AARP Michigan, Adult Well Being Services, Alzheimer’s Association, Area Agencies on Aging Association, Michigan Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs, Michigan Association of Senior Centers, Michigan Directors of Services to the Aging, Michigan Senior Advocates Council and the Senior Volunteer Programs of Michigan. The theme is “The Senior WAVE: We Advocate, Vote, and Energize the Economy.”
The event provides the opportunity to speak face-to-face with legislators and aides about the issues on their minds. A platform of issues developed by the organizers pushes: 1) access to a full range of high quality long term care options; 2) liveable communities with affordable/accessible housing, reliable transportation and affordable health insurance; and 3) protection from abuse and financial exploitation. Several components of the platform have already been addressed by the actions of the Michigan Legislature in 2012, and attendees will hear from the legislators that have played a role in those achievements. To see a copy of the platform, visit the event’s website at www.oldermichiganiansday.com.
