Dear Professor Bruce: Are the steps to starting a small business, or being self-employed, any different for a person with a disability? In other words, are there any additional considerations I should pay attention to as I develop my business idea?
Answer: According to Dr. Kim Cordingly of the Job Accommodation Network, many of the steps involved in starting a small business, or being self-employed, are the same, whether an individual has a disability or not.
The approach involves steps such as business planning, determining marketing strategies, locating financing options, choosing a business structure; and so on. Still, there are some important considerations in the planning process for an aspiring entrepreneur with a disability.
