Carrie Conn is an educator, but she says it's the children she serves, medically fragile with multiple disabilities, who often teach her.
"Those of us who have the opportunity to work with children with disabilities, or their families and friends, we know these children are little angels," the Bear Creek-area resident said. "They're very innocent, and they have so much to teach."
Conn says she cherishes each of the junior and senior high school students she works with at Cinco Ranch High School, along with the youths her nonprofit organization, Carrie's Heart, serves in Mexico.
The children her organization sponsors, like her students, are medically fragile with multiple disabilities.
But in Mexico, these children do not have a right to education. Their parents often struggle to care for them and don't have money or resources to meet their needs.
Carrie's Heart, based in Houston's Memorial area, sponsors 13 children. Conn visits them regularly, and her team of volunteers has been expanding to include physical, occupational and speech therapists, along with a registered nurse.
