Delays in obtaining criminal background checks for new employees and lack of access to the Elderly Waiver for assisted living residents were among the concerns expressed Monday by North Iowa long-term care providers.
They shared their concerns at a legislative forum sponsored by the Iowa Health Care Association (IHCA) and Iowa Center for Assisted Living (ICAL) at the I.O.O.F. Home.
Deb Haugen, administrator of the I.O.O.F. Home, said she was most concerned with criminal background checks that take several weeks to process.
“With the technology we have today, I think it’s kind of ludicrous,” Haugen said.
Mike Svejda, director of Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, agreed.
“I think we lose some very good employees that can’t wait that long,” he said.
Steve Ackerson, executive director of the IHCA and ICAL, said the process has been bogged down by an increasing number of workplaces that require background checks.
