Former "Star Wars" actress Carrie Fisher was honored for her candor in dealing with her bipolar disorder, as well as for how she has raised awareness about the condition.
On Friday evening, Fisher received the Utah Film Center's Kim Peek Award for Disability in Media in Salt Lake City.
Film founder Geralyn Dreyfous praised Fisher for sharing her bipolar disorder "with a mix of humor, defiance and grace," reports the Deseret News.
According to the 56-year-old actress, people face a choice of being a victim of bipolar disorder or "taking it on and flying in the face of it."
Fisher publicly announced her struggle with bipolar disorder in 2000.
