As notes of the national anthem poured out of loudspeakers, students of Government Secondary School for the Deaf, Kalkaji, presented the “silent” version of the anthem.
Their performance marked the inauguration of Badhte Kadam — a nationwide awareness campaign on disability — at the premises of Action for Ability Development and Inclusion in Hauz Khas on Saturday.
Flagged off by Kiran Walia, Delhi Minister of Education, Social Welfare, Language, Women and Child Development, the campaign will be conducted in five centres in the country — Aizawl, Nagpur, Thiruvananthapuram, Shimla and Jodhpur — before returning to Delhi on December 2, the eve of World Disability Day.
After the national anthem, a group of physically challenged musicians, Magic Group, played the violin.
Addressing the audience, Kiran Walia said: “The idea behind the campaign is to raise awareness and sensitivity towards disabilities in the country. While all of you are self-reliant, we would like you to approach the (social welfare) ministry for any kind of help.”
AADI member Madhu Grover said, “This is the fourth year for the Badhte Kadam campaign and it is being flagged off in Delhi.”
In the Capital, students will perform street plays, dances and participate in drawing competitions, on various issues related to disabilities, in many schools, colleges and public places such as Metro stations and parks.
