Gov. Romney has told older Americans they could stop listening when he talked about his Medicare plan —inferring that they have nothing to worry about.
But seniors should listen carefully. There are at least five reasons why people with Medicare today and those approaching retirement should be concerned about the Romney-Ryan plan.
First, the plan will increase Medicare premiums and co-insurance for today’s seniors.
Second, prescription drugs and preventive care would become more expensive.
Third, the plan drains the Medicare trust fund.
Fourth, the plan decimates the Medicaid program.
Finally, in the long term, the Romney-Ryan plan unravels the Medicare system.
Moreover, as the old Medicare system shrinks, fewer doctors will be willing to take Medicare. And while seniors might decide to join a private insurance plan, they would have to accept the plan’s limits on what doctors they can see. Either way, it means less access to physicians.
All this makes it clear that it is disingenuous, at best, to suggest that the Romney-Ryan Medicare plan has no impact on today’s seniors. Its implications are profound and troubling.
