The MiABLE Team hopes that you, your family and loved ones are staying safe and healthy. As we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to make sure that we can continually provide you with all the information you need.
ABLE accounts are an important part of a long term financial plan for individuals with disabilities. ABLE accounts assist people to become economically self-sufficient, without jeopardizing eligibility for state and federal programs like Medicaid, SSI, SNAP, etc. For those receiving a federal stimulus check through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, consider placing those funds into a MiABLE Account. ABLE Accounts allow for individuals to ensure that their money will not affect needs-based financial aid.
Michigan's MiABLE program has surpassed $17 Million in assets. Over 4300 accounts have been established in less than 5 years.
Assets in an ABLE account can be used for Qualified Disability Expenses (QDE) including:
- education
- housing
- transportation
- employment training and support
- assistive technology
- personal support services
- health care, illness prevention, medical equipment, and overall wellness
- financial management and administrative services
- legal fees
- expenses for oversight and monitoring
- end of life expenses
MiABLE account holders can request debit cards to pay for Qualified Disability Expenses.
Staff continue to educate parent groups, disability advocacy organizations, employee resource groups, and other potential MiABLE account holders throughout the state via Zoom, Facebook Live, and other virtual meeting methodology.
